My Money: Be top of the class with these savings on back to school stationery

Jan 14, 2024

Alongside the new shoes and trainers, backpacks and PE bags, the cost of stationery – from pencil cases and personalised pens to maths sets – can really start to add up.

In a post-lockdown world, many schools are changing the rules around what they will and won't provide/what children are allowed to share. My own daughter starts school this year and has been asked to provide her own (clearly labelled) glue stick and scissors in her own (clearly labelled) pencil case. But if we so much as add an HB pencil or a BiC biro to that case, the whole thing will be sent home (presumably alongside a snotty note about rule-breaking).

Depending on your child's age and the rules at their school, you are likely to need something so I’ve rounded up some of the best "back to school offers" currently available.

3 for 2 on stationery and 30 per cent off: Branded items such as STABILO highlighters and BiC ballpoint pens are included in the 3 for 2 offer alongside Paperchase's own brand items such as pencils, notebooks and folders. There is also a 30 per cent off promotion running site-wide – use the code SAVE30. T&Cs apply and the offer ends later this week. The 3 for 2 offer extends beyond stationery to include pencil cases, water bottles and lunch boxes too, paperchase.com

Running until 8 September, Tesco Clubcard holders can save up to 50 per cent off classroom essentials including an ombre backpack reduced from £15 to £7.50 and Oxford maths set tin down to £2 from £4. In store only, must hold a valid Club Card. Sign up for free at tesco.com/clubcard

Popular with pre-teens everywhere, the Smiggle range features eye-catching (and surprisingly practical) backpacks and lunch boxes and fun accessories. They are currently offering up to 50 per cent off school essentials, including water bottles from £5.95 and pencil cases from £5.50. Bundles – featuring a matching backpack, lunch box, bottle, pencil case and pack of pens – also have 30 per cent off so start from £57.75 for the lot, smiggle.co.uk

The supermarket's "middle of Lidl" promotions for this week include LEGO, Harry Potter and Paw Patrol branded lunch boxes from £4.99, backpacks from £12.99 and branded stationery on a two for £3 multibuy offer. In store only until Thursday, details at lidl.co.uk

The kings of stationery have cranked up their back to school offers with everything from 3 for 2 on pencil cases, backpacks and lunch boxes, to 50 per cent off stationery essentials and an impressive 10 for £10 offer on everything from pen packs to rulers and notebooks. You can also bag free delivery on orders over £25 with the code BTS25, ryman.co.uk

Current offers include up to 50 per cent off stationery – including a three-pack of Pritt Sticks for £3.49 (usually £6.99) or a 20-pack of Sharpie markers for £8.99 (usually £17.99) – while their own branded products are on 3 for 2 promotion. You can save a little extra with the promo code ACTFAST online (10 per cent off a £25 spend or 15 per cent off a £40 one) but only until Monday, whsmith.co.uk
