The King will could become the first monarch in Britain to be publicly anointed with holy oil
The most sacred part of King Charles III's Coronation could be caught on camera for the first time in history.
According to reports published by The Telegraph, the King could become the first monarch in Britain to be publicly anointed with holy oil at the ceremony on Saturday 6th May.
At Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation in 1953, the sacred pouring of the oil was done in private behind a gold cloth canopy. However, the Royal School of Needlework is thought to have designed an alternative canopy with a see-through top, allowing people to witness the special act for the very first time.
Following coronation traditions, the anointing takes place before the investiture and crowning. The Archbishop will pour holy oil from the Ampulla (or vessel) into the spoon, and will anoint the King's hands, heads and breast.
According to royal.co.uk, the Sovereign will be "anointed, blessed and consecrated" by the Archbishop of Canterbury, whilst seated in King Edward's chair (made in 1300, and used by every Sovereign since 1626). After receiving the orb and sceptres, the Archbishop will place St Edward's Crown on the King's head.
In other news, people are being encouraged to spend a day volunteering in their local community, as part of celebrations for the Coronation. Organised by The Together Coalition and 25 of the UK's biggest charities, The Big Help Out will take place on Monday 8th May 2023 and will highlight the positive impact volunteering has on communities across the nation.
A statement on royal.uk says: "In tribute to His Majesty The King's public service, The Big Help Out will encourage people to try volunteering for themselves and join the work being undertaken to support their local areas. The aim of The Big Help Out is to use volunteering to bring communities together and create a lasting volunteering legacy from the Coronation Weekend."
