Here's why the monarch is planning an early night

King Charles III has reportedly set himself a '6pm curfew' on the night before his Coronation to avoid exhausting himself.

The 74-year-old monarch, who will be officially crowned on Saturday 6th May 2023 at Westminster Abbey, will not carry out any official duties past 6pm so he can rest. Despite hosting a Buckingham Palace dinner for world leaders on Friday 5th May, the King is planning to slip away for an early night.

According to The Telegraph, a royal source said: "There have been some logistical challenges caused by the King. [The King] doesn't want to do anything in the evening in case it tires him out. There will be no partying."

This is a stark contrast to Queen Elizabeth II, who spent the night before her Coronation attending a Buckingham Palace banquet alongside 400 guests. The late Queen's Coronation took place on 2nd June 1953, and was the first to be televised which was a move encouraged by Prince Philip, in order to help modernise the Royal Family and ensure popularity with the public remained.

In other Coronation news, the upcoming ceremony will "reflect the monarch's role today", while being rooted in longstanding traditions. The King, who is in favour of a more streamlined monarchy, is planning a more toned-down affair that will reflect the way the world has changed over the past 70 years.

There have also been suggestions of it lasting just one hour, with around 2,000 dignitaries in attendance, compared to the three-hour-long ceremony and 8,000 signatures at Queen Elizabeth II's coronation.

Camilla, Queen Consort, will also be crowned at the same time during the historic event, which is the first to take place in nearly 70 years following the late Queen's long reign.
