Music of the Mountains: Los Cheesies

Primarily based in Boulder and Longmont, Los Cheesies started over twelve years ago from a vision by Shawn Camden and company. Camden lived in Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico over a period of four years before forming the band. He had joined a different rock band in Argentina, and he eventually formed a non-profit in Boulder County called Intercambio Uniting Communities in order to help immigrants. During his work in the non-profit sphere, he met Carmelo Lopez, who would eventually become the lead singer and bass player for Los Cheesies. Jamming together one day, they decided to form the band, which was named after another friend's nickname for 80s music videos.
The original lineup of the band broke up after a period of time, but in 2012, Camden and Lopez decided to make a comeback, adding lead guitarist Nick Thomas and many more new people to the band. Camden says of the group that they all have wildly different music tastes. For example, while Lopez likes rock, ska, and cumbia, Camden says he has more of a fondness for country and blues as well as rock and cumbia. This difference in music tastes between the band members leads to an eclectic music style that the band describes as an "original fusion [of] rock and roll, ska, reggae, rap and psychedelic rock."
From their re-forming, the band performed in many places in Nederland, including The Train Cars, Very Nice Brewery, and The Pioneer Inn. In 2018, when The Pioneer Inn had to cancel a performance of theirs last-minute, Whistlers, now known as Ned's, allowed them to perform. This is where Amanda McDonald first saw them and fell in love with their energy and sound, bringing them on to headline the 2019 celebration of Frozen Dead Guy Days.
Since then, they have headlined various festivals across Colorado and Wyoming, including the 2022 Frozen Dead Guy Days. They love the energy that comes from their audience as they play, and they love being able to interact with the audience as they let their unique shows come to life.
If you want to see Los Cheesies perform with The Pamlico Sound, head to The Caribou Room, 55 Indian Peaks Drive in Nederland, on Friday, February 17, 2023. Doors open and dinner starts at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m.
